THE LOWDOWN

World number 14 Danielle Collins finished runner-up to Ash Barty here last season in straight sets after an incredible run that saw victories over Elise Mertens, Alize Cornet and soon-to-be new world number one Iga Swiatek. The 29-year-old essentially burst onto the world stage in Melbourne with a run to the semi-finals back in 2019 and she made the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros a year later to prove herself a big-tournament player with more grit than most on tour. Three-set defeats to Elena Rybakina and then Veronika Kudermetova in Adelaide these past two weeks were both tight and the American will be pleased with two victories over tough foes in Karolina Pliskova and Jil Teichmann. Collins reached the round of 16 at the US Open last September before a thrilling three-set defeat to Aryna Sabalenka.

THE PREDICTION

World number 64 Anna Kalinskaya stunned Jelena Ostapenko in the first round of Adelaide 2 this week before a straight-sets defeat to Belinda Bencic on Wednesday but the Russian beat some tough foes in qualifying there. The 24-year-old has never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam but she did recently enjoy a great run to the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Masters before injury saw her retire against Marie Bouzkova. Wins against the likes of Barbora Krejcikova, Elise Mertens and Daria Kasatkina are proof of what she can be capable in this first meeting with Collins but underestimate the American at your peril. Collins would very likely never pick up a racket again if given the chance at one more Australian Open final and she will be a serious force for any player in Melbourne. Take Collins to win outright, probably in straight sets.
