World number 65 Ann Li shocked Anett Kontaveit in vastly impressive fashion on Thursday, handing the third seed a first-set bagel on her way to biggest win of her career. The 21-year-old won a first WTA title late last season at the Tenerife Ladies Open and she shared the Grampians Trophy with Kontaveit after their final was called off due to clashing with the Australian Open last year.
ALISON RISKE
World number 50 Alison Riske means business at the Miami Open after back-to-back straight-set victories over top 40 opponents in Jil Teichmann and Alize Cornet. The 31-year-old came back well from a long injury lay-off season to win the third WTA title of her career at the Linz Open and she finished runner-up to Madison Keys at Adelaide 2 back in January.
THE PREDICTION
Ann Li’s victory over one of the most in-form players in the world right now has to be taken into account here against the more experienced Alison Riske. This match could end up one of the sleeper hits of the day between two hard grafters, with Riske only recently stunning Garbine Muguruza at Indian Wells for a huge result of her own. Li won their only tour-level meeting in the second round of the US Open back in 2020 but Riske’s 2022 form suggests backing her to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners is the shrewd move here.
