25-year-old Anhelina Kalinina will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 47th after coming back from a set down to shock Madison Keys on Friday. The Ukrainian took the first set off of eventual Indian Wells champion Iga Swiatek two weeks ago before defeat there and she has been promising a statement victory like this for a few months on tour.
BEATRIZ HADDAD-MAIA
25-year-old Beatriz Haddad-Maia will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 57th after providing the shock of the tournament so far in Miami. The Brazilian beat Maria Sakkari, fresh from finishing runner-up at Indian Wells last weekend, from a set down on Friday to back-up a strong performance against Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the first round.
THE PREDICTION
This is one of, if not the most important, match of both players’ careers here with the winner set to make great strides on their career-high WTA world ranking and reach the round of 16 at a Masters event. Both have provided big upsets to reach this stage and set-up a fascinating first meeting that could go either way on the day. Haddad-Maia is an impressive battler, and her victory over Maria Sakkari eclipses Kalinina’s defeat of Madison Keys, but backing the Ukrainian to win at least a set here as the just-about likelier winner seems more reasonable based on recent form.
