THE LOWDOWN

ANETT KONTAVEIT

World number seven Anett Kontaveit ended last season as the WTA’s most in-form player with four tournaments won from her last eight played. She qualified for the WTA Finals by the skin of her teeth and then made the final on her debut before losing to Garbine Muguruza for the third time that week. The 26-year-old will fear nobody in Melbourne after an excellent campaign in Sydney was just overcome by Barbora Krejickova in the semi-finals and she should be considered a genuine title contender here, somewhere between the outsider and dark horse categories.

KATERINA SINIAKOVA

World number 48 Katerina Siniakova has lost both of her matches so far this season to Anna Bondar and Coco Gauff but the Czech is capable of pulling off the occasional deep run. The 25-year-old has two WTA titles to her name and she almost won a third last year with a run to the Bad Homburg final before losing to a resurgent Angelique Kerber. Siniakova is a seasoned doubles champion alongside world number four Barbora Krejcikova and they will be aiming for one better here in Melbourne after finishing runner-up in the Women’s Doubles last season.

THE PREDICTION

Siniakova was the winner in the only Grand Slam encounter between the two over three sets in the first round of the 2018 US Open but Kontaveit has had the lion’s share of wins over the years. The Estonian beat her twice last season in two of her title-winning campaigns at the Cleveland Championships and Kremlin Cup to take their head-to-head record to 4-1 and in her current form it should be 5-1 here. Siniakova is well capable of snatching a set so Kontaveit to win outright is the cautious pick here.
