THE LOWDOWN
ANETT KONTAVEIT
Sixth seed Anett Kontaveit took little time getting her promising Australian Open campaign underway with a straight-sets victory over Katerina Siniakova on Tuesday. The Estonian finished runner-up to Garbine Muguruza at the WTA Finals last season on her debut after winning four of her last five tournaments of the season. 26-year-old Kontaveit made the quarter-finals in Melbourne two years ago for a best Grand Slam showing so far.
CLARA TAUSON
World number 39 Clara Tauson came through her Australian Open debut in assured straight sets over Astra Sharma. The 19-year-old future star was a Girl’s Singles champion here back in 2019 and she has since established herself on the WTA tour, winning two titles last season in Lyon and Luxembourg.
THE PREDICTION
This is already a proper test of world number seven Anett Kontaveit’s title credentials as she draws the short straw of future star Clara Tauson. The Dane already has two titles on tour and she could have been part of the youth movement at the US Open last season were it not for a second round meeting with world number one Ash Barty. Tauson should break the top 20 this year but at this moment in time Kontaveit has enough battle behind her to come through the outright winner here, eventually.
