World number seven Anett Kontaveit was shocked in the third round of Indian Wells by an inspired Marketa Vondrousova but she reached the final of her previous two matches, winning the St. Petersburg Open and finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the Qatar Open. The 26-year-old won four of her last seven tournaments in 2021 to qualify for the WTA Finals, where she finished runner-up to Garbine Muguruza on her debut.
ANN LI
World number 66 Ann Li came back from a set down to beat Mayar Sherif in the first round of the Miami Open. The 21-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking in January after winning the Tenerife Ladies Open late last season in her second tour final. She was due to play her first against next opponent Anett Kontaveit at the Grampians Trophy in January last year but it was cancelled due to a clash with the Australian Open.
THE PREDICTION
This match has an odd history behind it as Anett Kontaveit and Ann Li have yet to face each other on court despite sharing the 2021 Grampians Trophy title after it was cancelled due to conflicting with the Australian Open. Li might have had a fair chance at the title on that day but since the late summer Kontaveit has evolved into a world-beating winning machine and she should be too hot to handle this time around. Li will be well-backed as the home underdog and she will also feel at home in the conditions as a resident of Orlando where she trains at the USTA Campus but back Kontaveit to win outright here for a cautious pick or in straight sets for a risk.
