THE PREDICTION
Defending champion Thanasi Kokkinakis overcame a resurgent Alexei Popyrin in three sets on Monday to get his Adelaide 2 campaign underway well. The 26-year-old enjoyed the best season of his injury-hampered career in 2022 and it started here in his home town in a joyous final, for everyone but Arthur Rinderknech, to win his maiden and only ATP title so far. This is a hugely tough ask for the Aussie, though, against world number six Andrey Rublev. The top seed in Adelaide will be eager to react strongly to last week’s early exit to Roberto Bautista Agut here as he desperately seeks more matches ahead of the Australian Open. Rublev made the semi-finals of the ATP Finals late last year with some stunning performances over Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas and despite his unpredictability in recent seasons he should be able to come through the outright winner of this first meeting with Kokkinakis. However, the shrewd move may be backing the Aussie to earn at least a set here with the partisan crowd well capable of unsettling Rublev’s recently delicate rhythm.
