Fifth seed Andrey Rublev conceded just seven games to Gianluca Mager on Tuesday to get his Australian Open campaign underway perfectly. The world number six reached the quarter-finals here last season to match his best result at a Grand Slam before losing to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev. Since then the 24-year-old has been beaten by three players outside the top 40, each in five sets, at: Roland-Garros (Struff), Wimbledon (Fucsovics) and the US Open (Tiafoe).
RICARDAS BERANKIS
World number 93 Ricardas Berankis eventually overcame Roberto Carballes Baena in five sets on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Australian Open for a third-successive year. The Lithuanian has reached the third round of a Grand Slam twice before, at the US Open in 2020 and Roland-Garros last season.
THE PREDICTION
Ricardas Berankis managed to take a set off Andrey Rublev in their only previous encounter back in 2019 at the St. Petersburg Open, a title that Rublev went on to win. This should be an altogether more straightforward affair for the Russian after his exploits in the first round but it is worth noting that he has been stunned in each of his last three majors. The Russian should be taking this in straight sets but you would be forgiven for taking him outright in an accumulator.
