THE LOWDOWN

World number seven Andrey Rublev won the all-Russian tie against former ATP Finals champion Daniil Medvedev on Monday, coming back from a set down to stun his compatriot in a deciding tiebreak. The 25-year-old recently made it four ATP titles won this season with a strong week at the Gijon Open but he is yet to win a title at Masters level or higher.

Former world number one Novak Djokovic looked assured in a straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas on Monday, beating the Greek for the ninth time in a row. The 35-year-old pulled within one of Rafael Nadal’s current Men’s Grand Slam titles record of 22 with a searing display at Wimbledon this summer, taking his third title on the spin at SW19 and a seventh overall. Djokovic was today cleared to play the Australian Open in 2023, suggesting that he will likely be allowed to play the full four slams next season.

THE PREDICTION

The news that Novak Djokovic will be allowed to play at the Australian Open in January next year, and therefore defend his title from 2021, should add an extra pep in his step at the ATP Finals in Turin. The Serb holds the record in Melbourne with nine titles at the season-opener and you can et he will make it his out-and-out mission of his life to level Rafael Nadal’s record one there with a 10th title, one year on from his well-documented deportation. The Serb has played with a point to prove late this season after missing much of the calendar for his stance on vaccination and after the first round of matches in Turin he looks the pretty solid favourite to level Roger Federer’s ATP Finals record at six with victory on Sunday. Andrey Rublev provided the biggest shock so far this week with a rare win over Daniil Medvedev but despite bearing Djokovic for the first time to win the Serbia Open back in May he will find a totally different, finer-tuned version here. Back Djokovic to win in straight sets.
