ANDREY RUBLEV
World number seven Andrey Rublev won back-to-back titles in February at the Open 13 in Marseille and the Dubai Tennis Championships for a grand total of 10 career ATP titles. The 24-year-old took a formidable 13-match winning streak into the semi-finals of Indian Wells last weekend before eventual champion Taylor Fritz beat him in straight sets. Rublev reached the semi-finals here last season, with his sole Masters final to date coming in a loss to Alexander Zverev at last season’s Cincinnati Open.
NICK KYRGIOS
26-year-old Nick Kyrgios beat Adrian Mannarino in straight sets in the first round of the Miami Open, with an 81% first serve in percentage a pretty formidable stat for the powerful Aussie. The former world number 13 also won his opening doubles match alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis, with whom he won the Australian Open Men’s Doubles back in January. Kyrgios finished runner-up to Grigor Dimitrov at the 2017 Cincinnati Masters for best showing at this level.
THE PREDICTION
This match should be worthy of popcorn between a ferocious brick wall in Andrey Rublev and perhaps tennis’ most vicious serve, belonging to Nick Kyrgios. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record with Kyrgios beating Rublev at the Moscow Open in 2018 and the Russian returning the favour at the US Open a year later and this third meeting could go any which way – particularly as Rublev is coming off the loss of a 13-match winning streak. Rublev should be able to find a way through this match but Kyrgios has needed Daniil Medvedev or Rafael Nadal to beat him this season and backing him to win at least a set here even if he loses looks the shrewd move.
