World number seven Andrey Rublev avenged his US Open defeat to Frances Tiafoe last season with a straight-sets victory over the American on Monday. The 24-year-old is riding an 11-match winning streak after rediscovering his best form last season with back-to-back titles won at the Open 13 and Dubai Tennis Championships. Rublev now has 10 ATP titles to his name and it should not be too long before he claims a first Masters trophy after finishing runner-up in his firs final last season to Alexander Zverev in Cincinnati.
HUBERT HURKACZ
World number 11 Hubert Hurkacz played well to beat Steve Johnson in straight sets on Monday after the American had found some bullish form this campaign. 25-year-old Hurkacz won a first Masters title this time last season at the Miami Open and he will start the defence of that title next week. The Pole enjoyed a best season yet in 2021 with a run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon and two further titles won at the Delray Beach Open and Moselle Open.
THE PREDICTION
This could be the match of the day on Wednesday if both Hubert Hurkacz and Andrey Rublev play to their best level. The pair met only recently in the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships where Andrey Rublev won in three sets on his way to the title last month. However, Hurkacz leads this head-to-head record 2-1 after a three-set victory at the 2020 Italian Open and a straight-sets victory at last season’s Miami Open on his way to a first Masters title. Having won both of their Masters matches, and at least a set in each of their three matches so far, backing Hurkacz to win at least a set looks the shrewd move here even if he loses.
