THE LOWDOWN
World number six Andrey Rublev fell foul of Adelaide’s remarkable, partisan atmosphere on Wednesday when he lost in three sets to defending champion Thanasi Kokkinakis and a previous opening loss to Roberto Bautista Agut the week before makes for poor reading coming into Melbourne. The 25-year-old ended last season in good shape with another ATP 250 title claimed at the Gijon Open and a run to the semi-finals of the ATP Finals, the latter of which saw him beat Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev from a set down, but the Russian looked like needing a break during a frustrating and occasionally worrying 2022 season and he played exhibitions throughout December. Rublev has reached the quarter-finals of Grand Slams on six previous occasions, including his last two played in New York and Paris.
THE PREDICTION
World number 99 Dominic Thiem began to see real improvements in his long-awaited return from wrist surgery late last season, with a run to the semi-final of the Gijon Open ended by Andrey Rublev in straight sets last October. The former world number three claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2020 before injuries started to take hold and it will be fascinating to see what he can do at the majors this season with plenty of tennis ahead of him at 29 years old. Rublev has beaten the Austrian in each of their last four encounters, each in straight sets, to lead their head-to-head 4-2 but given the Russian’s poor start and Thiem’s affinity with major tournaments this could be one of the real shocks of the first round. Backing Rublev to win outright is the reasonable pick here but backing Thiem to earn at least a set could be the shrewd move.
