THE PREDICTION

Former number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is an excellent all-court threat but she has enjoyed her most eye-catching results on clay in recent years. The 32-year-old finally broke her Grand Slam quarter-final duck in 2021 to finish runner-up to Barbora Krejcikova and she returned from injury this time last season to make the last eight in Paris once again, losing out to eventual runner-up Karolina Muchova, to further prove her credentials on the surface.

World number 47 Sara Sorribes Tormo is also at her best on clay, however, and the Spaniard is enjoying a good moment in these conditions after reaching the round of 16 in the Madrid Open singles before winning the Women’s Doubles title alongside Cristina Bucsa. The 27-year-old beat Nadia Podoroska in straight sets on Wednesday to get a decent foothold in the draw but Pavlyuchenkova leads their head-to-head 3-2 to remain the reasonable favourite. Sorribes Tormo, however, leads 2-1 on clay after claiming their most recent clash in Madrid two years ago in three sets. Pavlyuchenkova has earned at least a set in each of their last four encounters so take that cautious option to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: ANASTASIA PAVLYUCHENKOVA TO WIN A SET
