ALISON RISKE
31-year-old Alison Riske overcame an impressive Ann Li in three sets on Saturday to back-up two strong wins over Alize Cornet and Jil Teichmann. The world number 50 won the third WTA title of her career late last season at the Linz Open after a long injury lay-off and she finished runner-up to Madison Keys at Adelaide 2 back in January.
NAOMI OSAKA
Former world number one Naomi Osaka received a walkover to the round of 16 at the Miami Open after Karolina Muchova pulled out of their third round clash. 24-year-old Osaka is yet to drop a set this campaign, with an impressive victory over Angelique Kerber a real statement of intent. The Japanese star is a four-time Grand Slam champion and she owns two Masters titles from Indian Wells in 2018 and the Beijing Open a year later.
THE PREDICTION
Naomi Osaka is currently ranked at world number 77 after spending much of last season away from the tour but it should not be long before she returns to the top of the sport in this form. World number 50 Alison Riske is a significant threat as one of the WTA’s hardest grafters and she recently stunned Garbine Muguruza at Indian Wells. Osaka won their only previous tour-level meeting in straight sets but backing her outright is the sensible move here.
