World number three Alexander Zverev overcame compatriot Daniel Altmaier in a hard-fought three-set encounter on Rod Laver Arena. The third seed is essentially the second seed in terms of rankings here with Novak Djokovic removed from the draw but that means a likely semi-final clash with Daniil Medvedev is in many ways the actual final in Melbourne, with the other side of the draw wide open as things stand. Zverev enjoyed a best season on tour last year with his second ATP Finals title and a Gold Medal from the Tokyo Olympic Games accompanying two more Masters titles and a semi-final exit at the US Open.
JOHN MILLMAN
World number 89 John Millman has been drifting down the ATP rankings for some times but he proved his quality in an entertaining four-set victory over Feliciano Lopez on Monday. The 32-year-old is a well-loved home favourite here in Melbourne with memorable matches here over the years including a five-set defeat to Roger Federer in 2020, whom he had previously beaten to reach the US Open quarter-finals in 2018.
THE PREDICTION
Millman’s tireless efforts have taken him to two deciding sets against Alexander Zverev over the years as he trails in a close 2-0 head-to-head record with the German. After his exploits against Feliciano Lopez on Monday the Melbourne crowd will be readier still to back him to the hilt as a cult hero at the Australian Open and although that kind of atmosphere gets to Zverev less and less these days he is still only human. The likelihood here is that Zverev comes through in straight sets but it would not be a huge surprise to see him drop a set as a player who sometimes struggles to put the longer-format matches away. For that reason, Zverev as the outright winner is the sensible move here and Millman to snatch at least a set the interesting one-off punt.
