THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Alexander Zverev suffered an early exit in the second round of the Canada Masters last week with a surprisingly poor performance against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The 26-year-old won his first title since returning from injury this season at the Hamburg 500 on clay but he is at his most potent on hardcourts when at his peak. World number 19 Grigor Dimitrov has found some strong form in recent months but he pulled out of Toronto last week after a semi-final exit to eventual champion Dan Evans in Washington. The 32-year-old was well beaten by Zverev in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros back in June to trail the German 1-4 in their head-to-head, although their meetings on hardcourts have come close in a 2-1 record favouring Zverev. This is a really tricky call given Zverev’s poor exit last week and Dimitrov’s unknown fitness status but back the Bulgarian to win at least a set as he has done on all three of their hardcourt encounters.
