THE PREDICTION
Former world number two Alexander Zverev took the first two sets of the 2020 US Open final, his only Grand Slam final to date, before capitulating against Dominic Thiem three years ago. The current world number 12 has reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in successive seasons to suggest he has another final in him but there should be an extra shot of motivation in the German here in New York with unfinished business to exorcise. A straight-sets victory over Alexander Vukic on Tuesday is an assured way to start his 2023 campaign, backing up his run to the last four in Cincinnati two weeks ago, but this is no gimme against compatriot Daniel Altmaier. 24-year-old Altmaier came back from a set down to beat Constant Lestienne on Tuesday and he should break the top 50 on tour for the first time for his efforts. The younger German has stunned top 10 stars Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev on his favoured clay this season but Zverev should have too much for him on a hardcourt. Straight sets should do it but Altmaier certainly has the game to cause some tight moments. Back Zverev to win outright inside an accumulator or in three on its own.
