World number 27 Alexander Bublik enjoyed the best season of his career last year, producing a stunning run of form to beat Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev to the Halle Open title before a five-set exit to Andrey Rublev in the round of 16 at Wimbledon. The 26-year-old added a third career ATP title with victory at the European Open in October and he made the round of 16 at the Paris Masters with some strong form before defeat to eventual runner-up Grigor Dimitrov. A run to the semi-finals in Adelaide last week saw a tight defeat to Jack Draper but the Kazakh should be considered a serious threat to anyone in the first week of the Australian Open if he can walk that fine tightrope between his remarkable skills and his wayward attention span.
World number 137 Sumit Nagal qualified for a first appearance here since 2021 without dropping a set but he has not been afforded anything like a kind draw. Bublik is a hard man to back with total confidence but the Kazakh should be blasting through in straight sets here.
