World number 33 Alexander Bublik was at his best on Sunday to beat Andy Murray in straight sets. The 24-year-old won the first ATP title of his career last month at the Montpellier Open via a career-best ranking victory over Alexander Zverev in the final. Bublik reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open last season for a benchmark at Masters level.
GRIGOR DIMITROV
World number 35 Grigor Dimitrov overcame a potential banana skin on Sunday with a straight-sets victory over Jordan Thompson. The former world number three’s most recent of eight ATP titles came at the season-ending ATP Finals in 2017, the same year he won his only Masters title in Cincinnati. Dimitrov burst into form here last October with a run to the semi-finals via victories over Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz.
THE PREDICTION
This match should be kept well away from any accumulators as two of the most unpredictable men on tour meet for a fourth time. Alexander Bublik lives on the very edge of reason on court with two first serves and some madcap decision-making in key moments of his matches, whilst Dimitrov is well capable of world-beating tennis but rarely finds it. Bublik won the first two meetings with Dimitrov over three sets at the Chengdu Open in 2019 and straight-sets at Wimbledon last season, with Dimitrov returning the favour most recently at the Cincinnati Open. If Dimitrov can muster anything near his Indian Wells form from last season he should come through here so backing the Bulgarian to win at least a set looks the suitably cautious pick here.
