World number 31 Alex de Minaur beat John Millman for the fourth time out of four meetings with a straight-sets result on Sunday. The 23-year-old added two more ATP titles last season to a career total of five at the Antalya Open and Eastbourne International but he has since drifted some way back from a career-high ATP world ranking of 15th achieved last summer.
TOMMY PAUL
24-year-old Tommy Paul will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 37th after claiming the best win of his career over world number three Alexander Zverev in three sets on Sunday. The American was well-supported by a partisan crowd, something Zverev is going to have to get used to, but he was no less excellent as he continues in the same rich vein of form that saw him win a first ATP title late last season at the Stockholm Open.
THE PREDICTION
After a topsy-turvy season in 2021, Alex de Minaur started 2022 with a career-best ranking win over Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Cup in his native Sydney. There is likely no faster man on tour than De Minaur and the 23-year-old clearly has the potential to be unplayable on his day when everything comes together but there is always a nagging doubt about a killer instinct. Tommy Paul is in the form of his career and a victory over pantomime villain Zverev will pull even more supporters to his cause for this match. Over the course of their careers De Minaur should win the lion’s share of their encounters but this first one is likeliest to fall Paul’s way. Take him outright, or to win at least a set inside an accumulator.
