THE PREDICTION

This is a huge opportunity for one of world number 28 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and number 97 Cristian Garin to make a rare foray into the quarter-finals of a Masters event. 23-year-old Davidovich Fokina will be immensely pleased with this run as he comes up to the anniversary of his best to date when he finished runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Monte-Carlo Open. This campaign will provide some cushion in the ranking points if he fails to emulate that next month and he is set to rise to a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 26th after a brilliant three-set victory over Karen Khachanov. Former world number 17 Cristian Garin is the more surprising player to reach this stage, though, after a tough year and a half or so on tour. A straight-sets upset of Casper Ruud on Sunday saw him take his first two sets from a top 10 player on a hardcourt ever, backing-up a solid few rounds in the desert.

Garin is something of a sleeping giant on tour but runs like this and his surprise quarter-final at Wimbledon last summer suggest his form issues are mainly psychological. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record with both of their matches seeing a deciding set. Take this third instalment to see three once again or more cautiously back Davidovich Fokina to earn at least one of them, leaving the victor up to chance.
