THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Ben Shelton set a career-high ATP world ranking of 15th after beating Aslan Karatsev to the Tokyo Open title two weeks ago. The American burst onto the scene with a remarkable run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and he fabulously bettered that with a semi-final exit to Novak Djokovic at the US Open to prove himself a big game player but his tour progress in between had been minimal to say the least. A defeat to burgeoning rival Jannik Sinner last week, who went on to win the title in Vienna, resets things for Paris after his excellent Tokyo campaign and he should enjoy plenty of neutral support as an exciting new name with heaps of charisma. This should be a thrilling showdown between two players who love a highlight reel but world number 28 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina brings little recent form to the occasion. A run to the semi-finals of the Canada Masters in August was rewards for a strong patch of performances but he has lost five of his eight matches since. Back Shelton to edge through a match that could as easily need a deciding tiebreak as fall in two sets.
BETTING TIP: Ben Shelton to win.
