World number 52 Marcos Giron came perilously close to winning his maiden ATP title at the Dallas Open on Sunday, just losing out in three sets to Tommy Paul. The 30-year-old bounced back admirably, though, to beat Emilio Nava in straight sets on Tuesday and he will be confident of rolling through to the last eight after beating Adrian Mannarino in the semi-finals last week. World number 19 Mannarino barely played last week in Dallas with a bye to the round of 16 and a walkover to the quarter-finals before James Duckworth had to retire injured in their second set to fast-track him through to the last four. Whilst that could have all contributed to the Frenchman’s loss to Giron, the American now leads their head-to-head record 2-0 having not yet dropped a set in their encounters to offer a suitable alternative to picking a result here. Back Giron, who will enjoy a partisan support, to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
