THE PREDICTION
World number 16 Veronika Kudermetova enjoyed some of the best form of her career earlier this season, with runs to the semi-finals of both the Madrid Open and Italian Open back in May, but she has taken just two wins from her last five matches including that shocking defeat to 43-year-old Venus Williams in Cincinnati. This is a very tricky draw for both players as world number 61 Bernarda Pera comes in the home hopeful in some poor form of her own, far from the level that saw her set a career-high WTA world ranking of 27th earlier this year after winning back-to-back titles on clay last summer. The American takes a four-match losing streak into the first round that stretches back to her defeat in the German Open quarter-finals as the defending champion there and it certainly seems like there is a struggle for motivation. Kudermetova has suffered three early exits at Grand Slams this season to suggest there is an upset on the cards here but she should be able to come through Pera as the outright winner.
