THE PREDICTION

This could be a really entertaining tussle between Canada’s explosive second option Denis Shapovalov and the USA’s evergreen John Isner. The pair have never played a tour-level match against each other but they did recently claim a rare point for Team World at the Laver Cup last season as part of an effective doubles partnership. World number 14 Shapovalov missed out on Davis Cup duty alongside first option Felix Auger-Aliassime and the pair will be eager to attain for their absences. Shapovalov has played more recently, albeit in exhibition conditions, beating Taylor Fritz, lost to Andrey Rublev and then beat Rafael Nadal in three sets at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship last month. That match practice coupled with his usually excellent level for Team Canada suggests he can overcome Isner’s honest but possibly rusty game here.
