THE PREDICTION

It is well worth holding off on this match until Denis Shapovalov takes to court after the 22-year-old pulled out of his opening match with John Isner citing fatigue. World number 14 Shapovalov played the dead rubber doubles alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime as the pair aimed to find their rhythm ahead of two must-win ties with Germany and first Great Britain here but a 0-3 loss to the USA will sting. World number 25 Dan Evans inspired Great Britain to a 2-1 win over Germany with a superb dismissal of Jan-Lennard Struff and then a brilliant display in the deciding doubles alongside Jamie Murray that could prove the difference in this tie and indeed Group C if they can maintain that level.

31-year-old Evans has beaten Shapovalov whilst representing Great Britain before in the group stages of the 2017 Davis Cup but the Canadian is the more recent victor with a three-sets win at the 2019 Miami Open. After Evans’ performance on Sunday taking him to win at least a set here seems the reasonable option.
