THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Paula Badosa is set for a career-defining year after 2022 failed to deliver what her victory at the Sydney Tennis Classic this time last season promised. The 25-year-old came back from a set down to beat Harriet Dart at the United Cup, impressively so after recovering from cramping, and she looked better for it in a straight-sets result over Anett Kontaveit here in Adelaide on Tuesday. World number 32 Kaia Kanepi lost to Sorana Cirstea in qualifying before coming through as a lucky loser to blast past Storm Hunter on Tuesday. The Estonian veteran will be gearing up to resume her role as giant-killer at Grand Slams after she beat Angelique Kerber and Aryna Sabalenka on her way to the quarter-finals in Melbourne last season and she will be a serious challenge to Badosa here in their first tour-level encounter. Beating Kontaveit is an impressive result but it is difficult to back Badosa with much conviction right now. Take the Spaniard to earn at least a set here for a suitably cautious move.
