World number four Caroline Garcia received a bye to the round of 16 in Adelaide after her brilliant 2022 season ended perfectly with a first WTA Finals trophy. The 29-year-old was insatiable across all three surfaces from the summer onwards last year and she won both of her United Cup rubbers for France as well as one Mixed Doubles outing to get 2023 up and running well. World number 48 Katerina Siniakova is sort of the odd one out in this stupendously high-quality round of 16 but the Czech qualified well this weekend and went an easy set up against Anastasia Potapova on Tuesday before her opponent was forced to retire. 26-year-old Siniakova will be looking forward to another likely trophy-laden season alongside Barbora Krejcikova in Women’s Doubles but there were signs of improvement in her singles results late last year too. Garcia can be backed to win outright here in her current form but straight sets is probably too great a risk considering that Siniakova, remarkably, leads their head-to-head 4-1 at tour level.
