World number 29 Amanda Anisimova lost in three sets to Jil Teichmann in qualifying on Saturday but still made the first round in Adelaide as a lucky loser, fully utilising that second chance to beat a top player in Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets. That second chance could do wonders for the 21-year-old’s confidence as she continues to struggle to find her consistent best on tour and she was incredible this time last year, beating Naomi Osaka to reach the third round of the Australian Open before defeat to the eventual champion Ash Barty. World number 15 Beatriz Haddad-Maia won both of her United Cup matches with gusto to start a new season in promising form and the Brazilian ousted Sorana Cirstea in straight sets to get her Adelaide campaign underway. The 26-year-old enjoyed a hugely transformative season last year to win her first two WTA titles and finish runner-up at the Canada Masters and more can be expected of her in 2023.
Anisimova has won both of their previous meetings but she has never faced this version of Haddad-Maia. Three sets look likely here and that makes Haddad-Maia the more valuable, shrewder player to back to win at least one of them.
