World number 13 Belinda Bencic won the Billie Jean King Cup late last season to add to her two Gold Medals for Switzerland won in 2021 but the Swiss fell short in the United Cup to eventual semi-finalists Poland. World number 64 Anna Kalinskaya should be able to break her career-high WTA world ranking of 51st this season after an impressive 2022 and the Russian has started this year very well indeed. 24-year-old Kalinskaya had already beaten two top players in Adelaide’s ridiculously high-quality qualifying weekend before a brilliant straight-sets victory over Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday. Bencic beat the Russian twice last season on grass to take a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head record but both matches came close in two and three sets.
