THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting:
Stan Wawrinka beat Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-3, 6-1

STAN WAWRINKA

  • Stan Wawrinka was going strong at his native Swiss Indoors Open in Basel but was forced to pull out of a blockbuster quarter-final with the eventual champion Roger Federer.
  • Despite retiring from that tournament the Swiss number two rose one place to 16th in the ATP world rankings, which is where he is seeded here in what will be his 13th Paris Masters campaign.
  • 34-year-old Wawrinka is on an eight-match winning streak over old foe Marin Cilic and ha snot lost to the Croatian since the second round of the 2010 Australian Open, with five hard-court wins in that run.

MARIN CILIC

  • Tiebreak master Marin Cilic did well to beat an in-form Hubert Hurkacz in their first round match at the Paris Masters in straight sets to face Stan Wawrinka in the second.
  • The 31-year-old is ranked 24th in the world which is quite impressive after a wildly inconsistent year and not once reaching a semi-final all season, with a 22-18 record.
  • Cilic will have to upset the odds against Wawrinka, who seems to have the Croat’s number, if he is to progress to the quarter-finals of this tournament for a fourth consecutive year.

THE PREDICTION

Two stalwarts of the “best of the rest” league of this generation will face each other for a 15th time here with Stan Wawrinka holding the lion’s share of a 12-2 head-to-head record. Much of this match will rest on the fitness of Wawrinka who was forced to pull out of a match with Roger Federer last week, but the Swiss number two is playing well right now and might have the mental edge of his Croatian counterpart.
