Taylor Townsend picked up two qualifying victories after defeating Colombian seeds Camila Osorio and Emiliana Arango in straight sets to enter the main draw of the Washington Open. Her best result this season was a third-round appearance in Miami, winning four matches in total including in the qualifying rounds. Washington is likely to have similar court conditions which may give Townsend hope of another encouraging run.
It's been a rollercoaster last month for Tatjana Maria. She shocked the tennis world by winning Queen’s Club last month as a qualifier, beating the likes of Leylah Fernandez, Madison Keys and Amanda Anisimova along the way. However, her momentum stalled on grass as she suffered first-round defeats at Bad Homburg and Wimbledon. She then returned to form with another appearance in a final at Newport, but she lost to Caty McNally. Maria then made the transition to clay for an ITF event in Hamburg but suffered a first-round defeat to Viktoriya Tomova.
The 38-year-old has competed in a lot of events recently and might run out of steam, while she’s also transitioning to yet another surface after competing in one clay court event since the grass court swing ended.
