JUSTIN GAETHJE VS MAX HOLLOWAY LOWDOWN

2023 could not have gone much better for Justin Gaethje (25-4) after coming up short in two title fights. He was humbled and out grappled by Khabib Nurmagomedov (2020) and Charles Oliveira (2022) to fall out of the title picture. In between those losses he came out on top in a three-round war and ‘Fight of the Year’ display with Michael Chandler and regained that form last year by earning a majority decision over Rafael Fiziev. He then followed that up with the biggest win of his career by pulling off a perfect head kick knockout over Dustin Poirier to be crowned the ‘BMF’ champion.

Max Holloway (25-7) tried his hand back up at lightweight to fight for the symbolic title. Besides Alexander Volkanovski (2019, 2019, 2020), the only time he has lost in nearly 11 years was when he stepped up to lightweight to take on Dustin Poirier (2019). He could not match the power, but there is no doubting his class 28 fights deep into his UFC career. He is coming off a unanimous decision over Arnold Allen and knockout over the Korean Zombie Chan Sung Jung last year.

JUSTIN GAETHJE VS MAX HOLLOWAY PREDICTION

The title is irrelevant and this fight is more for their legacies. Gaethje is the favourite coming off that highlight reel knockout over the man that beat Holloway last time he stepped up to lightweight. However, we all know MMA maths does not add up and we expect this to be a lot closer than people expect.

The majority of this is likely to play out on the feet and Holloway is the better striker. He has better technique, volume and defence. The only attribute he comes up short in, is power.

If Gaethje’s clubbing hands and thunderous leg kicks add up, they will slow Holloway down, but his defence and chin should be too strong to get knocked out. We can see Holloway win more exchanges as the fight goes on. His basic jabs, 1-2’s and counters will find a home and we can see this frustrating Gaethje which will create more openings.

If Gaethje can stay composed and implement a game plan around his leg kicks and takedowns, he can can control large portions of the fight and sway the judges with his power. However, we do not expect him to shoot in giving Holloway the platform to let his hands fly with his defence being the difference.

Prediction: Holloway via Decision

Value bet: Holloway via Decision
