Mariano Navone enjoyed a productive European clay court season as he won his first tour-level title in Bucharest and also progressed to the final of the Geneva Open. The Argentine beat two-time Roland Garros finalist Casper Ruud but was unable to win a second title after a defeat to Learner Tien. Navone won his first-round match at the French Open but then lost a five set thriller to Jakub Mensik, with the Czech prevailing in a deciding tiebreak. The Argentine struggles on grass, but he did win his first-round match against Denis Shapovalov at Wimbledon last year.
He will now face Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian entered the Halle Open as a lucky loser last week, but he lost in round one to world number five Ben Shelton. Sonego has struggled to pick up victories since his return from a wrist injury.
Sonego has the far better record on grass, and this could be a presentable opportunity for him to find some form. If he is able to dominate the rallies with his aggressive style of play, he could have too much for Navone.
