Marta Kostyuk did not have much form coming into the Canadian Open but the 24th-seed Ukrainian is battling her way through the rounds in Montreal.
She has won all three matches in the deciding set and her latest win came against McCartney Kessler as she battled back from the losing the first set for a third consecutive match. Her determination, despite serving ten double faults, got her through another round and she will now be preparing for another battle against Elena Rybakina.
The number nine seed had to contend with a three-set tussle of her own as she overcame another spirited Ukrainian in Dayana Yastremska 5-7 6-2 7-5.
Rybakina’s serve has been key to her success so far in this tournament but she was not quite firing on all cylinders against Yastremska firing down seven aces but nine double faults.
The duo have met three times before and Rybakina has won the last two with Kostyuk winning their first meeting. Rybakina has dominated the last two though winning 6-2 6-1 and 6-2 6-2.
We have a sense that Kostyuk will run out of energy here and will find it tough to overcome the powerful Rybakina serve. She has battled her way through the rounds so far but this is where we think it comes to an end against such a strong opponent.
