Marie Bouzkova last competed at Wimbledon, pushing world number Aryna Sabalenka in their second-round match but ultimately falling to a straight sets defeat. She now returns to hard court, which may give her some encouragement as her joint-best finish this season came at Brisbane on the surface. She’s also returning to an event which she has won in the past, having beaten Anastasia Potapova on home soil in straight sets three years ago to win her maiden WTA title.

Gao Xinyu won both of her qualifying matches to get through to the main draw. She is currently ranked 164 in the world. She mainly competes on the ITF Circuit. Her best result of the season was in Leszno, where she made the final after winning four matches in a row, though she lost tamely to Elsa Jacquemot.

Bouzkova has fond memories of this tournament and will be aiming for another deep run this year. We view her as a heavy favourite to advance to the next round.
