Maria Sakkari picked up a fine win in round one of Washington as she defeated Great Britain’s Katie Boulter in straight sets. The Greek wildcard started strongly in both sets, racing to a 5-1 lead in set one and two. Boulter would claim a break back in both, but Sakkari still won 6-3 6-4. This was a step in the right direction for Sakkari after a very difficult season so far.
It gets a lot tougher however, as she now goes up against Emma Navarro, who is seeded second here. Navarro last competed at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth-round before a straight sets loss to Mirra Andreeva. The American failed to reach the quarters for the second year in a row but there were encouraging signs after a period of indifferent form. She does have a title on hard court this season after winning the Merida Open in March.
Sakkari leads the head-to-head 2-1 and all their matches have been on a hard court. Their most recent contest saw the Greek come from a set down to defeat Navarro in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells last year. She has suffered a drop in form since, and Navarro will be a clear favourite, but she cannot afford a poor start against someone she has already lost to on two previous occasions.
