Luis Carlos Alvarez produced a brilliant performance to thrash James McCabe 6-1 6-2 and win his first ever match on the ATP Tour. The Mexican did not lose serve and dominated the entire match at one of his home tournaments.
He now goes up against Aleksander Kovacevic. The American required three sets to get past Hady Habib. Kovacevic made a tremendous start to the match, winning the first five service games to easily win the first set but his level dropped as he lost the second and he then went an early break down in the decider.
Nevertheless, he broke straight back and finished the match far stronger to win 6-1 3-6 6-3. He will hope to improve his break point conversion in the next match, after taking just four out of a possible 12 against Habib.
Alvarez will be delighted to win his first tour-level match but his run should end at the hands of Kovacevic, who will be determined to put in an improved display.
