Leylah Fernandez last competed at Wimbledon, losing in the second-round to Laura Siegemund. The Canadian did manage a quarter-final appearance at the Nottingham Open, her joint best result of the season, but Fernandez has not produced any kind of consistency in 2025. The former US Open finalist will hope her fortunes improve on her preferred surface of hard court, but she will have her work cut out against rising star Maya Joint.
The 19-year-old has enjoyed a fabulous season so far, having picked up the first two titles in her career and moved up to 37 in the world rankings. Joint will have been disappointed by her first-round exit at Wimbledon, having won in Eastbourne a week earlier, but she should still be hugely encouraged by the strides she has taken during this campaign already.
This is an intriguing battle between two players who cover the court impressively and counter-punch effectively. Joint is fast becoming a dangerous player on the tour and Fernandez will need to be ready from the start here. There’s a strong chance this goes into a third set.
