Jessika Ponchet came from a set down to battle past lucky loser Nina Stojanovic and advance to the next stage of the Prague Open. Ponchet was two games away losing in straight sets but crucially broke Stojanovic’s serve deep in the second and raced clear in the third to win 4-6 7-5 6-1.
She will now play Barbora Palicova for a place in the last eight of the tournament. The Czech made sure yet another home favourite would make it through to the next stage after beating Priscilla Hon in three sets. This was a tough battle for Palicova, as she had to fight from a break down in the decider to defeat the Australian 6-2 3-6 6-3.
There’s very little to separate the pair, with both within 15 spaces of each other in the world rankings and needing three sets to make it through their respective first-round matches. Another decider in the round-of-16 may be required to find a winner between Ponchet and Palicova.
