Govind Nanda produced a brilliant display to defeat fellow American Colson Smith in straight sets and advance to the next stage of the Los Cabos Open. He got an early break in set one and reeled off four straight games in the second set to win 6-4 6-2.
He will now go up against Denis Shapovalov. The Canadian has not featured on the tour since a disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon. Despite being a former semi-finalist in 2021 and taking the first set, he produced an erratic display as Mariano Navone picked up his first ever win on grass in the main draw of a tournament. Shapovalov’s season has taken a slide ever since the winter, but he may respond well to a return to hard courts, as he already has a title on the surface this season in Dallas.
Despite his recent struggles, Shapovalov will be a considered a very firm favourite to make it through against Nanda.
