  • Villarreal have lost one of their last eight UEFA competition matches at home (W5 D2).
  • Villarreal have won only two of their last seven UEFA competition matches against French teams (L5).

  • Villarreal have won three of the eight European ties in which they lost the first leg away, suffering elimination in the most recent, against Liverpool in the 2021/22 Champions League semi-finals (0-2 a a, 2-3 h).
  • The Spanish side have lost an away first leg by a four-goal margin once before, in the 2010/11 Europa League semi-finals in 2010/11 when Porto beat them 5-1 in Portugal and Villarreal bowed out despite a 3-2 success in the home return.
  • Marseille have lost only one of their last ten UEFA competition matches (W6 D3).

  • Marseille have won 18 of the 24 UEFA competition ties in which they have claimed a home first-leg lead. This is their joint-biggest margin of victory in a home first leg. They beat Croatian side Hadjuk Split 4-0 at home and 3-0 away in the 1987/88 European Cup Winners' Cup second round and then in the 1990/91 European Cup first round, they defeated Albanian side Dinamo Tirana 5-1 at home before a 0-0 away draw.

  • Marseille are aiming for a first Europa League quarter-final appearance since 2017/18 when they reached the final

THE PREDICTION

Marcelino returned to the south of France last week for the first time after leaving Marseille earlier this season and received a hostile reception. His improving and in-form Villarreal side were then torn to shreds by four goals to nil at Stade Velodrome. The Yellow Submarine have since pulled off a thrilling 3-2 win at the Benito Villamarin against Real Betis. Villarreal supporters aren’t necessarily demanding but Marcelino will at least expect a response from his players and a high-scoring thriller therefore would appear the best bet for this one as Marseille aim to rest and rotate ahead of a busy spring.

TIP: VILLARREAL TO WIN
