THE LOWDOWN

BARCELONA

Barcelona are expected to come into the 2022-23 Women’s Champions League final as clear favourites, despite having not won as many titles in this competition as their opponents. They are widely seen by many as the best team in women’s club football and a win here will help cement that legacy. They were pushed hard by Chelsea in the semi-finals but ultimately wound up too strong for Emma Hayes’ side, winning by two goals to one on aggregate.

One of the most impressive aspects of Barcelona’s success in this season’s competition has been them doing so well without the services of captain Alexia Putellas through a long-term injury. Aitana Bonmati has starred for them, scoring five goals from midfield and currently tops the assists chart having set up seven goals. Mariona Caldentey is also worthy of a mention, the 27-year-old forward recording four goals and four assists.

WOLFSBURG

Two-time Women’s Champions League winners Wolfsburg are aiming to make it a hat-trick of titles, firmly establishing themselves within the top three most successive clubs in European women’s football behind Lyon and Eintracht Frankfurt. They made a through a thrilling two-legged semi-final clash with Arsenal, winning after extra time by five goals to four on aggregate after a 119th minute goal from Pauline Bremer broke the hearts of the Gunners at Emirates Stadium.

In Ewa Pajor, Wolfsburg boast this season’s Women’s Champions League top scorer, the Polish striker having found the net nine times so far in the competition leading up to the final. If Wolfsburg are to triumph over Barcelona, Pajor is likely to have played a huge role in their success, whilst the experienced Svenja Huth has four assists to her name, one more than Kathrin Hendrich.

THE PREDICTION

Barcelona are expected to dominate possession in Eindhoven and on a big pitch at the Philips Stadion, their style of play should prove effective. Wolfsburg though, have goals in their locker and will likely be able to fashion chances against this Barca side. Back both teams to score over 90 minutes regardless of the final outcome. But in terms of who ultimately lifts the trophy, the class of this Barcelona unit should see them come out on top.

TIP: BARCELONA TO WIN AND BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
