THE LOWDOWN

Villarreal

Quique Setien’s appointment at Villarreal came in difficult circumstances because of Unai Emery’s sudden departure to Aston Villa. The supporters, and even reportedly members within the club, have remained unconvinced by Setien for the long-term. The former Real Betis and Barcelona coach does have a reputation for being a bit pretentious and potentially overly complex when it comes to style of play but Villarreal have been genuinely entertaining, as well as consistently earning good results.

The home team come into this on the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Rayo Vallecano in what may have been Andoni Iraola’s final home game in charge of the opposition. Villarreal had enjoyed three successive victories in that match, though, as they made sure of fifth spot ahead of the final couple of games.

As mentioned, Setien’s style of football is good to watch and that was shown even in defeat at Vallecas last weekend. The Yellow Submarine managed to score in that game and they have managed to score in 16 successive La Liga matches. In fact, they have only failed to score in one of their last 24 Liga matches and that came in a 1-0 defeat to the impressive defence of champions Barcelona.

Atletico Madrid

At the turn of the year, it was expected that this would be the final few months of Diego Simeone’s reign in charge of Atletico Madrid. Los Rojiblancos had been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and faced a tough test to finish in he top four. However, they have been excellent in the last few months of the campaign, despite the odd blip in recent weeks, and head into the final day with the goal of finishing above Real Madrid for the fifth time in the last nine years.

Los Rojiblancos come into this on the back of a 2-1 win at home to a Real Sociedad side that will be joining them in the UEFA Champions League group stages next season. Atleti have suffered just three league defeats in the calendar year of 2023.

All three of those defeats have been by a goal to nil with two of them coming against the eventual champions Barcelona, whilst the other came in a bizarre match against arguably the in-form team in the league, bottom-of-the-table and already relegated Elche. With Antoine Griezmann in fine form, though, Atletico are looking to finish strong ahead of what could be a special 2023/24 season.

THE PREDICTION

Neither of these sides have much to play for with one game of the 2022/23 La Liga season to go. As mentioned, both of these teams will be in the group stages of European competition next season with Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League and Atletico Madrid getting back into the UEFA Champions League. Both of the managers in this match have come under serious pressure at the respective clubs at different stages of the season but both have overcome that to finish in a really impressive and entertaining manner. Given that, this one could be a high-scoring and fun encounter at El Madrigal.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE & OVER 2.5 GOALS
