THE LOWDOWN

Real Valladolid

Real Valladolid were promoted to the top-flight last season, finishing second in the table behind Almeria. Under the management of former Cruzeiro boss Paulo Pezzolano, Valladolid would have believed their current points total, of 39 after 37 games, would have been enough to avoid an immediate return to the second-tier. However, they begin the weekend sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places.

The home team come into this on the back of a vital point collected in Andalusia against Almeria, whom they were automatically promoted alongside last season. That goalless draw followed a 3-1 demolition of 2022/23 La Liga champions Barcelona as they cling on to potential survival.

A leaky defence has caused Valladolid’s major issues this season with 63 goals conceded in their 37 games being the third weakest defensive record in the league. Only already relegated duo Espanyol and Elche have conceded more, having both shipped 66 goals with a game to go.

Getafe

Quique Sanchez Flores was brought in to keep Getafe up last season and the former Watford boss performed that task successfully. This time around, though, the club on the outskirts of Madrid have struggled throughout the campaign and begin this final round of fixtures in a six-way battle to avoid filling the final relegation spot in the bottom three. Quique Sanchez Flores was dismissed in March and replaced by the returning Jose Bordalas.

The intensity and aggression that Bordalas instils into his sides can be successful and is often effective, as shown by leading Getafe deep into the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League a few years ago. His methods have taken time to impact upon this group of Getafe players but they are finally showing signs, just in the nick of time.

The visitors come into this on the back of a 2-1 win against top seven chasing Osasuna in their most recent outing, last weekend, making it back-to-back victories. They have suffered just one defeat in their last five matches.

THE PREDICTION

The final day permutations are complex ahead of this weekend with six teams fighting against being the one side that joins Espanyol and Elche in the Segunda next season. If Real Valladolid win then they will avoid the drop, no matter what happens elsewhere, because Getafe, at least, will be a side that falls below them in the table. If that does happen then Getafe will be reliant on relegated Espanyol and champions Barcelona to prevent Almeria and Celta winning respectively. If it is a draw then they could stay up on the head-to-head rule if either Almeria or Celta are beaten. The only way in which Getafe are relegated is if the aforementioned duo win and they lose. Either way, this is going to be a tense and nervy evening with under 2.5 goals seeming highly likely.
