THE LOWDOWN

Elche

Elche had their relegation from La Liga mathematically confirmed a few weeks ago. They will return to the second-tier for the first time since their promotion via the playoffs in 2020. It was a horrible first-half of the season for the club and they didn’t win until the turn of the year. Since their aforementioned relegation was confirmed and bottom spot ‘clinched’, Elche have let their hair down a little bit and are finishing their most recent stint in the top-flight with a bit of a flourish.

Since their relegation was confirmed, Elche have become one of the in-form teams in the entire division. Their most recent outing was a slender 1-0 victory away to top seven chasing Athletic Club in the Basque Country last weekend. Lucas Boye scored a winning goal in second-half stoppage-time at the San Mames.

That victory means they are unbeaten in their last four matches and have suffered just one defeat in six games. In that time, they have hammered UEFA Europa Conference League hopefuls Rayo Vallecano, held in-form Getafe and UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla to 1-1 draws and defeated both Athletic, as mentioned, and Atletico Madrid.

Cadiz

With one game of the 2022/23 La Liga season to go, there is just one place still to be filled in the bottom three and the relegation places. Cadiz are firmly in the midst of the six-team battle to avoid the drop this weekend. The Andalusians have been in the top-flight since their promotion from the Segunda Division at the end of the 2019/20 campaign. They have battle against the drop ever since but have always managed to claw themselves to safety.

Last weekend, Cadiz enjoyed a much-needed and impressive 1-0 win at home to their fellow relegation battlers, Celta Vigo. That victory, courtesy of a 53rd minute winner from Ruben Sobrino, has left the Yellow Submarine in a strong position to avoid the drop with a very low percentage chance of every result going against them.

Under the management of former Real Valladolid boss, Sergio, Cadiz have been reliant on a pragmatic and defensive, determined style of football to achieve a lower-mid-table position going into the final day. In their 37 matches so far this season, they have scored just 29 goals, which is the fewest in the league. Their last four matches have all featured a team keeping a clean sheet and that has happened in 25 of their games this year.

THE PREDICTION

Under the management of Sebastian Beccacece, Elche would like to think their spell back in the Segunda is a short one. They are finishing La Liga in impressive fashion to prove they do not belong in the second-tier with the likes of Lucas Boye and Pere Milla beginning to thrive but a bit too late in order to keep them up. The way in which Cadiz are relegated is a bit of a complex one. In order for the Andalusians to drop, Valladolid would have to win, as well as Celta, Almeria and Valencia and then Cadiz losing at bottom-of-the-table, already relegated Elche would see them return to the second division. Cadiz will expect to win this one but, regardless of the match result, a low-scoring encounter is expected between the league's lowest scorers.
