THE LOWDOWN

BARCELONA

In late-January, Xavi Hernandez announced that he would be departing Barcelona at the end of the season with the Blaugrana consistently underperforming. The Catalans have since been much-improved, both in terms of performances and results, as they move back into the top two of La Liga and reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Barcelona come into this one on the back of a very impressive 3-0 defeat of Atletico Madrid in their most recent outing a couple of weeks ago at the Metropolitano with goals from Joao Felix, Robert Lewandowski and Fermin Lopez. Barca are now unbeaten in ten matches across all competitions since Xavi’s aforementioned announcement.

LAS PALMAS

Following promotion last season, Las Palmas begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table and they have been in contention for a top seven or eight finish and potential European qualification for much of the campaign but have significantly drifted in the last month and a half or so.

The Canary Islanders come into this one on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat at home to Almeria in their most recent outing a couple of weeks ago before the March international break. That loss means that Las Palmas are now winless in their last five matches and now begin the match day sitting five points adrift of the aforementioned top seven.

THE TEAM NEWS

Andreas Christensen and Frenkie de Jong are both unavailable for this weekend, with the likes of Ronald Araujo, Pedri and Robert Lewandowski all doubts.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Ter Stegen; Kounde, Araujo, Cubarsi, Fort; Lopez, Gundogan, Roberto; Raphinha, Lewandowski, Joao Felix

UNAVAILABLE: Christensen (Injured), Balde (Injured), De Jong (Injured)

LAS PALMAS

Up against his parent club, Julian Araujo is unavailable for the trip to Catalonia because the Mexico international right-back is missing due to a hamstring injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-5-1): Valles; Park, Suarez, Marmol, Cardona; Munir, Javier Munoz, Perrone, Rodriguez, Moleiro; Sandro Ramirez

UNAVAILABLE: Araujo (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Barcelona have been in excellent form ever since the announcement that Xavi would depart and the former Spain captain has tried to suggestion there is a correlation between those things without ever explaining why that might be. They now welcome a Las Palmas side that do appear to have maybe hit the beach having achieved what they wanted already this season and done so surprisingly early: survival. A Barca win, and a comfortable one at that, is to be expected on Saturday afternoon.

TIP: BARCELONA TO WIN TO NIL
