THE LOWDOWN

ALAVES

Following promotion last season, Deportivo Alaves have enjoyed a steady campaign as they look set to avoid even a relegation battle, which is a success. However, at the turn of the year, there was an expectation that manager Luis Garcia Plaza was to be sacked soon before an immediate improvement in the New Year.

The pressure may well be growing on the Basque club once again, though, as they suffered a third defeat in their last four La Liga matches down in Andalusia. Up against a Granada side simply waiting for their relegation to be mathematically confirmed, Alaves suffered a 2-0 loss with first-half goals from Myrto Uzuni and Lucas Boye.

ATLETICO MADRID

Diego Simeone will never be under pressure for the sack at Atletico Madrid having transformed the club in his long reign in charge of Los Rojiblancos but there may be a temptation for him to depart the club this summer after they messed up their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund in midweek.

Atletico won the first-leg by two goals to one at the Metropolitano before falling to 3-2 down in Dortmund in the second-leg. Atletico recovered in the second-half and re-established their lead but will be viewed as having ‘bottled’ it when they ended up losing 4-2 on the night and therefore 5-4 on aggregate.

THE PREDICTION

Deportivo Alaves could do with something stirring them as they fizzle and fade out towards the end of this season. A game against an under pressure Atletico Madrid team may just be the ticket. Alaves are a functional, pragmatic and cautious team, whilst Atletico are known for their lack of attacking want or desire. This one is not expected to be overly interesting or thrilling for the neutral and will also most likely not be a pretty spectacle.
