Benfica

The pre-season appointment of PSV Eindhoven manager Roger Schmidt has proven to be an impressive one by Benfica. The Lisbon club head into the final day of the campaign knowing that a victory at home to already relegated opposition will mean they regain the Portuguese title for the first time in four years.

Benfica have the disadvantage of having a worse head-to-head record against Porto so if they were to drop any points in this match, it would leave open the opportunity for the reigning champions to retain their title.

They come into this on the back of a 2-2 draw away to Sporting CP. They went 2-0 down before half-time but equalised deep into second-half stoppage-time, which kept them in the Primeira Liga driving seat and forced their city rivals into the UEFA Europa League for next season.

Santa Clara

Santa Clara have had their relegation mathematically confirmed ahead of the final day of the season. Under the management of Danildo Accioly, The Azoreans from the Atlantic Ocean will be playing second-tier football next season.

The bottom-of-the-table side are finishing the 2022/23 Primeira Liga campaign with something of a flourish, though. Their most recent outing was a 1-0 defeat win at home to Portimonense, meaning they have suffered just two defeats in their last five matches and that one defeat came in a 5-3 thriller against third-place Braga.

The visitors have been poor throughout the campaign and will be incredibly disappointed to have slipped all the way down from a seventh-place finish last year to this automatic relegation. However, they are maintaining some pride.

THE PREDICTION

A couple of months ago, many would have expected the Portuguese title race to have been wrapped up heading into the final match day of the campaign. However, due the aforementioned mid-April blip that Benfica suffered, the door is slightly ajar for their arch O Classico rivals, Porto, to steal the title from their grasp. The hosts have recovered well from that blip and their fight back at home to Sporting last weekend has extended their unbeaten run of form to six matches in all competitions. Facing a Santa Clara side with little to play for other than continuing their half-decent form and restoring some pride, Benfica should finally get over the line and be crowned champions this weekend.
