THE LOWDOWN
SAMPDORIA
Sampdoria were on the end of a 5-1 hammering against AC Milan in their latest contest as their woeful run continued. Fabio Quagliarella levelled the scores after Rafael Leao’s early opener but Sampdoria crumbled on the back of that as they allowed Oliver Giroud to secure a hat-trick while Brahim Diaz also found the back of the net.
Relegation is already confirmed for Sampdoria having struggled all campaign, winning just three of their 36 games to date. It is now nine matches without a win while they have lost four of their last five. During that run, they have found the back of the net on just two occasions while they have conceded a total of 15, an average of three per game.
This will be Sampdoria’s final home game of the campaign and while they will hope to bow out on a high, the atmosphere is not likely to be favourable. They have failed to win any of their last four on home soil and have claimed just one win in front of their own fans throughout the entirety of this Serie A season.
SASSUOLO
Sassuolo were on the end of a disappointing home defeat to Monza last time out as their run without a win was extended. They suffered late heartbreak as a penalty in injury time for Monza’s Matteo Pessina landed the spoils for the away side. Domenico Beradi had given Sassuolo the lead on the stroke of half-time before Patrick Ciurria levelled but it was a second yellow for centre-back Ruan which turned the game.
Sassuolo were valiant in their efforts to hold on but they ultimately succumbed to the suckerpunch in the dying embers of the contest. That loss was their third in their last four while they have won just one of their last six which is set to result in them finishing in mid-table.
Their away form has been a concern of late and that is something they will be eager to address in their final game on the road. They have lost their last four, conceding 11 goals during that run. Prior to those games, they were unbeaten in five away games so they have at least shown what they are capable of at various points.
THE PREDICTION
Sampdoria cannot wait for the season to end and they may feel the wrath of their fans in this final home game of the campaign. They have amassed just 18 points in what has been a wretched season and while they will aim to drop into Serie B on a high note, they have failed to win any of their last nine games. Visitors Sassuolo have also not performed too well of late having failed to win any of their last four but they have scored double the amount of goals than the home side and they should be able to earn a positive result in this one.
